PET MOVERS
Moving with pets can be fun or hell- it is your decision. Here are a few tips to help.
Our last article explained how moving process can be stressful for people. However, not only humans feel the pressure. Our dogs and cats get much more nervous while changing their place of residence. Many moving blogs provide a lot of information about this topic, but Your Right Move LLC decided to dig deeper and find out what kind of problems you can face during your move and how to help your pet go through this mess.
First of all, we asked the professional. Only a veterinary doctor can give you a real answer on what to do with your little (or maybe big friend).
International Veterinary Organization answered our questions for you
Your Right Move LLC (YRML) - Can pets feel stress?
-They sure do. Moving can cause serious problems for your pets. You can explain your animal, that you are moving. They simply do not understand what is going on.
YRML-What should you do to reduce this stress?
Well, here, I can give you a piece of advice
1) Dogs/cats have to get used to traveling in the car. Start with a short drive and make it longer every time.
2) Diet. Do not feed your pet within 6-12 hours before driving. It is also good not to give bones to your dog two days in advance.
3) Take a long walk with your dog (up to an hour) and try to make stops on your way. Your pet is very active, so it can't stay in one position for a long time.If your trip is more than 3 hours, make a stop for 10-15 minutes.
4) Remember, that a new atmosphere, new smell and different surroundings can make your pet be less behaved and much more excited. You should take with you a short and long leash and be ready if your pet's behavior begins to change.
5) Your pet must always have fresh air in the car, but do not open window too much to avoid your pet getting a cold.
6) Take some water with you. Your pet should always have cold water available to drink. As soon as you see your little friend is thirsty, stop the car and give them something to drink.
7) Your pet must be comfortable in the car. Leave him as much space as possible so your pet will be able to lay down comfortably.
We hope these recommendations will really help you during the move. Now, lets see what kind of troubles can occur to the pets after they move to their new home.
-I just moved, my dog is itching so bad, but it does not have fleas.

YRML- It can be an allergy. Maybe something in the new house caused it ( carpets, dirt), but we strongly recommend to take your pet to the vet. To help your pet stop itching you can use this: Benydryl, 1 milligram per pound. It will help stop the itching or allergic reaction. Your pet will more than likely get very sleepy.
I just moved and brought my dog with me. She was living in the same place since she was 8 weeks old. She's now a little over a year and a half old. She is a German Shepherd. So far, I can't get her to eat. She has tried to eat the cat's food, but not her own. How can I get her to eat again? She seems comfortable in her new place but maybe I'm wrong.

YRML- She is probably just feeling a bit stressed. We would recommend offering her something like boiled chicken breasts (NO BONES, no seasonings or oil). Chicken is easy on the stomach and she'll probably like the taste.
If she eats dry food only, you could buy some wet food to mix in with the dry. In most cases, it is normal animal reaction to stress. Give your pet some time and love.

• We just moved into a house into a different city, from which my dog was used to apartments since she was about 3 months old. She now has a big yard to roam and play. It's been a week and she is oddly calm and quiet. She has never barked, but her playfulness has diminished since we got here...not the same bundle of energy as normal.... Could this be her adjusting to the new surroundings? there are a number of other dogs in the neighborhood as well..... Anything helps.....Thanks in advance!

• YRML-This is simply a case of a change in routine. Take longer walks, play more and pay some extra attention to your friend. These initial days your pet really needs you to be around. Your pets activity level will return as soon as the stress is gone.

• YRML-Cats do understand that they changed their home. They need some time to accept changes. There are a few things you can do to find your cat.
- Best time to search for it is in the evening. As soon as it is dark, cats feel more safe and secure, so they are more likely to stop hiding and go out to look for food.
- Check your old home. Cats are amazing at being able to find their way home even across great distances. Some cats have crossed entire countries to get back to their old homes. You might will have to visit your old place more than once. If somebody has already moved in, you might want to tell them about your loss and provide your phone number in case they will receive a visit from your cat.
-put some food outside. If your cat did not go back to your old house, it is more than likely that your pet is somewhere close.
-Post signs near your old place AND your new place. Let people know about what happened. It will boost the chances of finding your cat by help from your kind neighbors.
